Mike leads Halpin’s Maritime Mechatronic focus, working primarily on applied engineering research projects but also contributing electronics and computer engineering expertise to projects in other themes requiring technical input. Mike specialises in embedded computer firmware coding and human-machine interaction, but as a ‘maker’ practitioner also wears a number of hats for Halpin ranging from 3D modeller and prototype developer to electronic circuit designer and circuit board fabricator.
In previous careers Mike worked in the aviation industry, where he piloted full-size helicopters supporting offshore oil and gas installations and as an operator and educator in the unmanned aircraft sector, and was employed as an electronics engineer in the offshore survey industry where he was responsible for deployment, operation and maintenance of marine seismic and geophysics survey equipment. Mike’s work in aviation was centred on the North Sea and the Irish Sea but he served on survey vessels operating in the North Sea, the Gulf of Suez and the South China Sea.
