Supporting Sustainable Maritime Growth Through Responsible Research and Innovation

Welcome to the HALPIN Centre for Research & Innovation at the National Maritime College of Ireland. At HALPIN, we undertake maritime research, with the aim of promoting the development of a vibrant and dynamic maritime sector, capable of realising its full potential in contributing to the sustainable economic, social and environmental development of the island of Ireland and that of our international partners, for the benefit of all.

The centre is a key partner in Ireland’s national effort to build a strong maritime sector. The HALPIN team work closely with other research and innovation teams in MTU, as well as with an extensive network of Irish, European & international partners.

With the Irish Naval Service we can provide access to real life testing environments. As well as this we have a 10 acre waterside campus complete with cutting edge simulation facilities including a full sized working ship’s engine room, and a fully instrumented ship’s control room. Marine simulators include full mission bridge simulators, engine room simulators, fleet work simulators, VTS simulators, GMDSS simulators and liquid cargo handling and damage control simulators.

The HALPIN Centre for Research & Innovation

HALPIN is the research & innovation pillar of the National Maritime College of Ireland (NMCI) which is a constituent college of the Munster Technological University (MTU) and a partnership with the Irish Naval Service (INS). The National Maritime College of Ireland is the first third level college in the country to be built under the government’s Public Private Partnership scheme (PPP). Through this partnership, HALPIN is the maritime research and innovation centre for MTU and also undertakes research and innovation activities on behalf of the INS.

NMCI has developed a strong reputation in research through successful partnerships in European funded research projects since its inception. In 2012 Halpin was created as the formal research entity for NMCI. To date Halpin has successfully completed 32 externally funded research & innovation projects and has 11 projects ongoing. HALPIN has secured over €6 million in competitive research funding from Irish, European and international sources and from both public and private entities. HALPIN has worked with over 200 research, innovation, industry and public-sector partners in Ireland, Europe and across the world.
